Parents and children have been learning woodworking skills thanks to an Australian couple who were forced to pivot their business due to restrictions and shutdown.
When COVID-19 hit, Josephine and Ray Azizi’s Sydney party woodwork party business, Built By Kidz Parties, was forced to rethink its strategy.
Jo says: “When COVID-19 came, and our business took a massive fall, we decided to create Built By Kidz Party in a Box and activity kids so that families around Australia could enjoy our woodwork parties and activities.”
Built By Kidz Parties events were started in 2014 by Josephine and Ray Azizi, who have three daughters. Ray is a carpenter by trade, and the couple is dedicated to teaching woodworking skills to children in a fun way. Parents were so enthusiastic about the skill-based party concept that they scheduled their parties months in advance.
The skill-based party concept was a hit with parents, and events were sold out months in advance.
Ray and Jo had to shift quickly when the pandemic struck. They came up with the idea of creating a Built By Kidz Party in a Box, which parents from all around Australia could buy as a fun and instructive birthday party in a box or as an activity.
Ray adds: “DIY birthday woodwork party kits have proved popular with parents keen to teach their kids life skills whilst having fun. Some parents have purchased the activity boxes as a lockdown or screen-free activity.
“We have a passion for sharing the beauty and skill of carpentry and a genuine love of working with children and helping them excel and create. Our DIY birthday party woodwork projects are delivered nationally. Parents can purchase them for a party or as an activity box. We want children around Australia to enjoy our woodwork and to learn an important life skill at the same time.”

Jo explains: “This is the perfect option for a unique, exciting, and skill-building party that will even get the parents involved. We offer the options of 12 of our popular Toolbox, Slide Box, OR Trinket box projects in one package. We offer several add ons such as markers, paints, and brushes to allow the kids to express their creativity and let their imagination run wild. An easy-to-follow instruction card is included in your package to ensure your party is hassle-free. These projects are suitable for ages 5 to 12. Parents should have a read-through and even do a practice run before the party. All woodwork is pre-cut from high-quality and durable 12mm MDF and is ready to build – no cutting or sawing! We also offer the option for a small-sized hammer to be included if you don’t have one already. Please keep in mind that only one hammer is required, as parents should be supervising this step one on one, and no child should be using a hammer unattended.”
